Key representatives from the project unveiled a plaque to recognise the LEED Canada Gold Certification of the Clinical Academic Campus at Kelowna General Hospital

Greener Building in the Okanagan

Infusion Health has struck GOLD. And the Okanagan has gained a richer healthcare environment because of it.
The Kelowna General Hospital Clinical Academic Campus has achieved the first accredited LEED Canada Gold certified building within Kelowna and the Okanagan.

The Canada Green Building Council promotes sustainable buildings throughout Canadian communities and LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally acclaimed third party certification program. It is just one of several programs that the CaGBC provides to the building industry; their goal is to enhance, promote and educate the public on sustainability. In particular, the LEED program takes on the “whole-building” approach by outlining five key areas: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

The project company Infusion Health, formed to design and build the Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals, understands that LEED Certification is a vital program to adopt into their company policies, programming and operations. It demonstrates that they are passionate about sustainability; that they have concern for the environment and its resources, and it contributes to the ever growing knowledge base surrounding green building.

The Vernon Jubilee Hospital Polson Tower, also built to LEED Gold standards, celebrated their official Grand Opening on October 13, 2011. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by a large audience of elected officials from the Okanagan Valley and surrounding communities. Staff, physicians, nurses, patients and representatives from the community came to commemorate not only a new tower and facility, but to also recognize that healthcare and the environment co-exist and the two are linked by a commonality: to provide a healthy and sustainable environment to everyone.

A plaque unveiling ceremony was held on October 21, 2011 for the Clinical Academic Campus at KGH which houses two of the UBC Faculty of Medicine programs and provides students with 34,000 square feet of space to learn and hone their skills. It now proudly displays the LEED gold plaque.

In January 2012, Kelowna General Hospital’s Centennial Tower will join these two facilities in achieving both completion and a place next to them on the LEED podium.

Infusion Health consists of Bilfinger Berger Project Investments and John Laing who both own an equal share in the project company.
